Pineapple Herb Juice (pineapple juice recipe and book review)

this pineapple juice recipe comes from juice, recipes for juicing, cleansing, and living well, by Heidi de Castro, Hedi Gores, and Hayden Slater.  i received this book from the publisher to review, and i’ve really enjoyed the diverse recipes, from raw fruit and vegetable juices, to nut milks.  there’s also the added benefit of detailed nutritional information for the ingredients, which is great in building a repertoire for my own health, as well as looking for sources for nutrients for my kiddos and their needs.

just before we moved, i finished a three day juice fast/cleanse.  my dear friend mia had begun offering them at her shop, and i wanted to start fresh with a clean slate for myself.  admittedly, it was difficult to stick to it during packing and showing a house with a family of seven, but it was such a feeling of conquering, too, to overcome the distractions and just. do. it.

another heart-friend reminded me to use it as a time of spiritual renewal, too, and i am so glad i listened to her.  it’s amazing what a little self-denial can do toward reminding oneself what really matters.  it’s also amazing how much appreciation grows for all things, not just food, when we re-train the palate, both internal and digestive, to appreciate simplicity.

the act of juicing is calming; it forces one to slow down and appreciate process, not just end result.  (then there’s the clean-up, and if you’re like me, the desire to find what can be done with the “leftovers…” that’s my next adventure.)

paper mache recipe (a recipe for play in our homeschool)

“mama, i’m not sure i’m a paper mache guy,” he said.  the glue-y goop dripped from his fingers as he slid the newspaper strips through and slapped them onto the balloon.  but we sat together for hours that day the next, using a basic paper mache recipe to make a bowl we wouldn’t use.  and it was fun.

homeschool craft ideas a

paper mache creates messy, gooey, drippy moments that broke from the everyday.  it creates temporary works of art and magical moments when science happens naturally.

balloons slowly leak air or makeshift molds don’t release and projects have to be scrapped.  lessons are learned through curiosity and freedom to explore is a gift.

the chance for me, too, as mama, to let go of the “have to” and be all-in for the tactile experience of slick, cool flour-and-water paste, is a rare gift.

adding a drop or two of an essential oil makes it even better, because lavender is relaxing and peppermint is stimulating, and another sense is engaged, awakening further our experience.

this basic recipe for paper mache can also be found in recipe for play, a book we received for review.

(amounts vary, but a 1/1 ratio is good, and 1 cup of each gave us more than enough for several projects such is this balloon-mold bowl.)
